Laura Carlin's ceramic tiles I think achieve something unusual within homewares in that they have a real sense of narrative, capturing the everyday, and slightly unglamorous, as well as the iconic aspects of "London Life". This reflection of the ordinary within this work I think has a real sense of charm, and you can understand why it would be so popular amongst London residents - as well as visitors and admirers of the city. What I find really interesting is the slight reference to traditional blue and white porcelain china, especially within a piece of work that, one could argue, is breaking conventions - with Laura Carlin's naive, playful style and unconventional subject matter. I think trying to achieve a similar sense of story-telling within my illustrations for a homewares context could be a really valuable and interesting way to approach this brief.
