Shape & Texture: Self portrait

Leading on from the shape based session, we learnt how to use this in combination with texture. Because the internet was down, we were then set the task of creating a self portrait within the session. (which I really enjoyed!)

Luke Best

I really enjoyed using simple shape in the previous session, but seeing the potential of this aesthetic in combination with different textures I think makes it really exciting as a process. I choose Luke Best as an example from the presentation because I just think his work is really charming. I like the almost lo-fi visual quality of his work as you can see the defined shapes he has collaged together to create his images. The textures he has used however soften these hard shapes and bring a sense of the hand-made/the maker to his work. How he has used the same textures or coloured shapes in different areas across the image also helps to bring harmony to the composition.

My self portrait - Despite this being a self - portrait, I tried to let go of creating something that actually resembled me and just tried to have fun with creating and using these different textures.

I am not wholly happy with this self-portrait, as I think the textures and colours do not work very well together, and it is quite out of proportion - on the other hand it does maybe have a certain character or charm to it. I think the image would have been brought together better if I had used the same texture from the eye pupils as for my top. The important thing I learnt from this session is that I really enjoy using shape and would like to do more of it, especially combining this with texture I think brings the potential of creating some really exciting images!
