Inspired by Eleni Kalorkoti's work I began creating patterns using different tones of ink. I think the monotone combined with the playfulness of the patterns works well to convey the tone I would like for my book.
I began experimenting with using these patterns to create images. I like the idea of using these two particular patterns to express the native american saying 'when a raven flaps its wings it creates the wing, lightning and thunder'. I was worried that parring this with the black textured paper would look disjointed, but I think it actually works quite well.
I thought that this potentially could be a good way to express the same narrative. I like the use of negative space to create the 'wavy' pattern.
These two images are about the closest I've got to in terms of how my finished illustrations could look. I really like the use of texture and simple shape. I also think the colour palette works well - to me it well reflects and identifies the subject, but does not give an ominous or evil tone.
