In this session we learnt about using collage to create images, and then were set the task of creating a poster advertising some kind of event or happening.
Anthony Zinonos
In many ways I think using collage to create images employs a very similar process and method of thinking to that of shape. Both rely on a good understanding of arrangement and layout, as you have to consider how things will relate to each other on the page. Anthony Zinono's work I think demonstrates really clever and careful consideration of composition. The two images above, I think especially show a effective use of space and perspective to create minimal yet eye-catching images. Also I feel that it is exactly this minimalist approach Zinonos takes to his work that makes it so atmospheric. There is also another quality that using collage can bring to work, and that is the ability to reimagine an image into a new context. Often this is used to inject humour, however I think Zinonos uses this as a way to reduce and distill information to make an image more immediate.
My final poster - I have a very strong liking and interest of hats, therefore as soon as I found a magazine full of them they immediately became subject of my poster. Through this task, I wanted to explore the opportunity collage poses to reimagine and subvert imagery to make it represent something different from its original purpose.
I really like the little details I've used to create certain bits of type and the humorous aspect of the poster. Compositionally, however, it is not very strong. I struggled a lot with arranging collected images into a well balanced image, and so left the final thing quite minimal. In the end I think I fell into a lack of confidence. I also feel that I should have been more inventive in the way that I was collecting my images, as well as experimenting with changing them through scanning, photocopying, drawing on them.. ect. Overall I think I find collage quite tricky as a process as I struggle sometimes to put humour or wit into my work. I think you have to employ this really inventive and playful attitude towards the images you are collecting and how to arrange them. Something I also found hard was working with pre-existing images - the fact that your not making the components of the image yourself means the way you can arrange things becomes limited...
