Revised Statement of Intent

I have been prioritising my context of practice project over any other form of work. In reflection of this, I have perhaps been poorly managing my time. It would have been possible to balance my workload more effectively between modules. Now that the deadline for context of practice has passed, I would like to re-focus onto extended practice and finally get moving on the projects that have been set in the background too long.

My intentions for this module have slightly changed, influenced by the results of other projects I have already completed this year. Something abundantly clear to me now is that I most enjoy making images using print, particularly screen-print and mono-print. I would like this, therefore, to become an integral part of this module, primarily to experiment with different forms of producing screen-print positives. I would like to use print processes to produce a series of both content-led images adapted to certain contexts – such as editorial or publishing – as well as illustrative products such as zines or hand-printed clothing.

I think it will be important to have this balance between work and play, to build a body of work that reflects both avenues of my interests in the creative industries. I would still like to produce a series of editorials, spanning across a number of formats, on topics that concern me, such as environmental or social issues. All three titles in the Penguin Random House student award, is another major project I would like to complete within this module to produce a body of work that demonstrates my interest in illustrative publishing.  I would also like to make a campaign for the YCN, ‘Dogs Trust’ brief. All three of these projects fulfil my desire to communicate serious content with simple and conceptual ideas.

In contrast, I would also like to produce a body of illustrative products such as limited edition prints or zines, hand-printed textiles and ceramics. Tackling serious content and conceptual ideas are integral to my practice, however I think it is equally important to give myself the opportunity to play and further develop my visual style by just drawing or making. As a context of illustration, homewares, textiles or ceramics, is also something I could see myself working in beyond this degree.

In response to the talks held at Hanbury Hall on Friday, I would also like to create a body of moving image work within this module. Many speakers highlighted the fact that an animated image grabs the attention of the viewer more effectively than a still, especially on social media platforms such as instagram or facebook. For briefs, such as the dog trust campaign making a short animation or gif could therefore be very appropriate. With the rise of online news and magazines, I think it would also be beneficial to me as a practitioner to develop some of my editorials into looping gifs. As a personal project, I would also like to make a small animation to music or sound recording, such as the work of illustrator Lilli Carre.

To manage my time more effectively moving forward I have created a plan of action, in which I have dedicated specific amounts of time to each of these projects. Even so, I would still like to leave myself a degree of flexibility to allow this body of work to develop naturally during the progress of the module.
